What exactly happened to Tulum?
It wasn't just a bad month. Tulum recorded 41.5% hotel occupancy in the week of July 4 to 10, 2026, at the height of the summer high season, while the Quintana Roo average was 59.6% and Costa Mujeres reached 71.3%. Visits to the archaeological site fell 33.1% in the first quarter of 2026: 257,978 people versus 385,879 in the same period of 2025, a loss of nearly 128 thousand visitors.
The causes are documented and cumulative. Price is the first: average lodging in Tulum came to cost around 27% more than in Playa del Carmen and 26% more than in Cancún. The second is safety: the crime rate went from 393 to 529 crimes per 100,000 inhabitants in a year, compared to 287 in Cancún. The third is sargassum, which hits the whole coast between April and August.
There is a fourth factor, less cited but highly visible: taxis. The absence of taximeters and excessive charges generated a reputational crisis so large that in October 2025 Tulum's own merchants published an apology to tourists asking for another chance. In July 2026 the union began installing visible official fare charts to curb the abuses.

So is it no longer worth going to Tulum?
Yes, it's worth it, but for different reasons than five years ago, and with two concrete pieces of good news. The first: access to Parque del Jaguar became officially free by federal decree published in July 2026. The second: precisely because there are fewer people, the ruins and beaches are enjoyed better today than at the 2022 peak.
What changed is the calculation. Tulum is no longer the trendy destination with emerging-destination prices: it is an expensive destination with infrastructure in transition. The municipal plan considers restricting private vehicle access to the park's south zone, with an electric fleet, bike lanes and walkways, so the beach corridor will progressively close to motorized vehicles. If you go, go informed; if your criterion is value for money, there are better options.
What are the best alternatives to Tulum in 2026?
What if what I liked about Tulum was the cenotes and the ruins?
The cenotes of the Riviera Maya are not in Tulum: they are on the highway. Dos Ojos, Gran Cenote, Calavera and Zacil-Ha can be visited just as well from Puerto Morelos or Playa del Carmen, with considerably cheaper lodging and without the friction of Tulum's taxis. For the ruins, Cobá is 45 kilometers away and Chichén Itzá is a day trip from half the peninsula.
If what you're looking for is the combination of turquoise water, archaeology and a relaxed atmosphere, Bacalar plus the San Felipe fort, or Cozumel plus Punta Sur park, offer a comparable experience for considerably less money.

How much do you really save by switching destinations?
The most useful comparison is not the hotel price, but the cost of getting around for a full day, which is where Tulum shoots up. In Tulum, a day with three or four taxi rides between the town, the ruins and the hotel zone can add up to between 400 and 700 pesos without having entered anywhere. In Bacalar, a full-day motorbike costs 550 pesos and covers the entire lakeshore.
