To get around Isla Holbox you first need to understand one thing: it's a car-free island. Nobody drives a car through its sand streets. You arrive by ferry from Chiquilá (about a 25-30 minute crossing), leave your car in a parking lot at the mainland port, and on the island you move by golf cart, scooter, quad, bike, or on foot. Why does Isla Holbox have no cars?
Holbox is an island in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, in northern Quintana Roo, separated from the mainland by Yalahau Lagoon. The entire island lies within the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protection Area, decreed in 1994 and recognized as a Ramsar site since 2004, according to Mexico's National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP). Because of that protected status and its sand streets, private cars don't circulate in Holbox: the town is covered on foot, by bike, and by golf cart. It's not a seasonal restriction, it's how the island works all year.
This completely changes how you plan your mobility. The question isn't which car to rent for the island, because on the island you don't drive a car. The question is twofold: how you get to Holbox (the ferry from Chiquilá and where you leave your vehicle) and what you move around in once there (golf cart, scooter, quad, or bike). Understanding that difference saves you surprises and lets you make the most of the island from day one.
How do you get to Holbox? The ferry from Chiquilá
The only usual access to Holbox is by sea, from the port of Chiquilá on the mainland. If you arrive driving, Chiquilá is about 145 kilometers from Cancún, between two and two and a half hours by road, and it also connects with Mérida and the Riviera Maya. In Chiquilá you leave your car in a guarded parking lot (there are several within 500 meters of the pier, with reference rates of 50 to 150 pesos per day, according to local media and agencies) and cross by ferry. The crossing takes about 25 to 30 minutes.
Tip
Book the parking in Chiquilá for the number of nights you'll stay and keep the ticket. Don't take the car beyond the pier: in Holbox there's nowhere to take it. Bring down only the luggage you can carry yourself to the ferry.
How much does the ferry cost and how often does it run?
Two ferry companies cover the Chiquilá-Holbox route: Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos. Between them there are departures roughly every half hour, alternating schedules, over a wide part of the day (broadly from early morning until close to 9:30 pm). The reference fare is around 330 pesos per trip for an adult, with a reduced price for children, according to local media and the ferry companies themselves; it's worth confirming the fare and the day's schedule at the ticket booth or on their website, because they change by season. You don't need to book the regular ferry in advance.
What do you move around in on the island?
Once in Holbox, the star vehicle is the golf cart. It's what the taxis, the hotels, and most visitors use to explore beyond the center. There are also scooters and quads, nimble on the sand, and bicycles, perfect for the town and for reaching nearby beaches at a relaxed pace. And there's always the option of walking: Holbox's center is compact and very pedestrian-friendly. The choice depends on how far you want to go and how much luggage or company you carry.
How far are the key spots within Holbox?
Distances in Holbox are short, but the sand makes them feel longer on foot in the heat. From the center, Punta Mosquito lies to the east, a sandbar known for its birds and flamingos, about twenty to thirty minutes by bike or cart depending on the tide. Punta Cocos is to the south, the quietest beach and the best spot for seasonal bioluminescence. The pier and the main square are in the heart of the town, all walkable. With a golf cart you link the three in a single day without depending on schedules.
