Why tour Huatulco by car and not only by boat or tour?
Huatulco has 9 bays, 36 beaches, inland waterfalls, and coastal towns spread across about 35 kilometers of coastline, according to CONANP. The classic boat tour visits the bays from the sea, and it's great, but it leaves out everything you can't see from the water: the Copalita waterfalls, the archaeological zone, the lookouts, and the towns along Highway 200. With your own car that whole map opens up. You can start at a bay in the morning, go up to the waterfalls at midday, and return to another beach in the afternoon, linking stops a single tour never combines.
The route: bays, Copalita, and the waterfalls
The backbone is the 200 federal coastal highway, which crosses the whole region. From La Crucecita, to the east you reach the Bocana del Río Copalita archaeological zone in about 10 minutes, by the river's mouth; and continuing inland via the turnoff toward the sierra, in around 1.5 hours you reach the Cascadas Mágicas de Copalitilla, about 40 km away. To the west, the same 200 links Pochutla, Puerto Ángel, Zipolite, and Mazunte. The nearby bays —Santa Cruz, Chahué, Tangolunda, Conejos, Maguey, and La Entrega— connect via short roads from La Crucecita.
The Cascadas Mágicas de Copalitilla
About 40 km from La Crucecita, inland in Oaxaca's southern sierra, the Cascadas Mágicas de Copalitilla form a set of falls and pools over the Copalitilla river, in the Llano Grande and San Miguel del Puerto area. The water comes down cool from the mountain and gathers in natural turquoise-toned pools, surrounded by coffee farms and forest. It's the perfect contrast to the sea: in the same region you go from the Pacific bays to the sierra's pools. Arriving by car lets you explore at your own pace, without the rush of a tour with a set return time.

The Bocana del Río Copalita archaeological zone, run by INAH, opens Tuesday to Sunday and is just about 10 km from La Crucecita, by the sea. It was a site that controlled coastal navigation; combining it with the waterfalls and a bay makes a full day of coast, history, and mountain.

The bays you can reach by car
You don't need a boat for everything. Maguey, about 3 km by road from Santa Cruz, has a calm beach, palapas, and good snorkeling. La Entrega, about 2.5 km along a winding road, is a favorite for seeing fish near the shore. Santa Cruz, Chahué, and Tangolunda are the developed bays, with marina, boardwalk, and hotels. Conejos is reached by paved road. Save the boat for the pristine bays that really are sea-only —Cacaluta, Chachacual, El Órgano, Riscalillo— and reach everything else on your own. That combination, car plus a boat outing, is what makes the most of Huatulco.
One day or two? How to plan your trip
A well-planned day gives you plenty: bay early, Copalita archaeological zone mid-morning, waterfalls at midday, and back in the afternoon to another beach. If you have two days, separate the coast from the sierra: one day of bays and snorkeling, another for the waterfalls at ease and maybe a coffee farm on the way. And if your trip is longer, Highway 200 to the west takes you to Puerto Ángel, Mazunte, and, about 100 km away, Puerto Escondido. With your own car, the decision is yours and you change it on the fly; with a tour, you can't.
