The coastal strip around Mazunte is a string of beaches and nature within a few kilometers. Punta Cometa: the sunset you won't want to miss
Punta Cometa, also called the Sacred Hill, is the most protruding point of land in this part of the Pacific and one of the southernmost on the Oaxaca coast. Every afternoon, dozens of people climb the trail —about 15 to 30 minutes on foot from Mazunte— to watch the sun set over the sea. It was a ceremonial site in pre-Hispanic times, and today it is famous as the region's best sunset viewpoint. In winter, whales can be seen from there. The climb is on foot, but reaching Mazunte with your own vehicle gives you the flexibility to be there right at the golden hour, without depending on the last shared van of the day.
La Ventanilla: mangrove lagoon with crocodiles
Three or four kilometers from Mazunte, on Highway 200 toward Puerto Escondido, lies La Ventanilla: a mangrove lagoon where a community cooperative offers canoe tours among crocodiles, iguanas, and a huge variety of birds. The tour is guided by local residents, who after the 1990 turtle ban reoriented the area toward ecotourism and conservation. It is one of the coast's most memorable nature experiences, and it is a short hop by car from town. The same community takes part in turtle protection, a central theme along this strip: nearby Playa Escobilla is one of the world's most important olive ridley turtle nesting sanctuaries.

The Ventanilla tour is done in small groups with community guides. Bring cash, insect repellent, and biodegradable sunscreen, and respect the instructions: it is a protected ecosystem with crocodiles in the wild.
