From Mérida to Uxmal by car is about 80 kilometers, a little over an hour to the south; there the Puuc Route begins with Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak, and Labná. In another direction, to the east, the ring of cenotes of Homún and Cuzamá is an hour away (~55 km). These sites are very spread out across the peninsula and poorly served by public transport; by car you link them at your own pace, drop into a cenote when the heat peaks, and don't depend on a tour's schedule. This is the getaway that pairs best with a rented vehicle.
Why do Uxmal and the cenotes by car and not on a tour?
Uxmal is one of Yucatán's great Maya cities and, unlike other more crowded sites, it receives fewer people, so the time you arrive changes everything. With your own car you can leave Mérida early, be at the gate at opening, and walk the Pyramid of the Magician and the Nunnery Quadrangle with better light and less heat. Afterward you decide: continue along the Puuc Route to Kabah and Labná, or change plans and drop into a cenote. That freedom is exactly what a rented vehicle gives you and a tour, with its fixed schedule and closed route, doesn't.
Uxmal and the Puuc Route: a World Heritage Site
Uxmal was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 and is the most representative site of Puuc architecture, with its carved-stone facades and its Chaac masks. It's about 80 km south of Mérida, and from there the Puuc Route links, over about 40 km, the archaeological sites of Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak, and Labná, all managed by INAH. Each is smaller and more intimate than Uxmal, with very few visitors. By car you visit them one after another in a morning; by public transport, they barely connect to each other.
The cenotes of Homún and Cuzamá: the heart of the ring
Homún and Cuzamá, about 55 km east of Mérida (near an hour by car), are the epicenter of the ring of cenotes, a formation of dozens of cenotes that circles the peninsula. Cuzamá is just about 3 km from Homún, and between the two towns there are more than fifteen cenotes you can visit: some open, others underground, with crystal-clear water and hanging roots. Entry usually costs a few pesos in cash, and in Homún you can hire a motorcart to go from one to another. With your own car you arrive early, choose the less crowded cenotes, and don't depend on a tour taking you only to the famous ones.
Tip
Many of Homún's cenotes are rustic and reached by dirt roads, so a car with good clearance or a pickup helps. Almost all charge cash entry and ask for a prior shower to protect the water. Wear your swimsuit, bring a towel, footwear that can get wet, and some cash in pesos.

One day or two? How to plan your trip
Uxmal and the Puuc Route can be done in a full day from Mérida: leave early, Uxmal at opening, and on the way back Kabah and maybe Labná. The Homún cenotes are a different day, because they're in the opposite direction (east) and deserve their own morning. If you have time, dedicating one day to the southern ruins and another to the eastern cenotes lets you enjoy each without rushing, and you still return to sleep in Mérida. With your own car, the decision is yours and you can change it on the fly; with a closed tour, you can't. That's why this route is among those that make the most of a rented vehicle.
