From Cholula to Atlixco, another 25-30 km south on the federal road, between 30 and 40 minutes, with the volcanoes in the background almost the whole way. Many travelers start early in Cholula, eat in Atlixco, and return in the afternoon. With a car you can flip the order, stretch a stop, or add Africam Safari (about 17 km from Puebla) without redoing the whole plan.
Cholula and its Great Pyramid: the hidden giant
Cholula has been a Magic Town since 2012 and holds a record that surprises: the Great Pyramid, or Tlachihualtépetl (hand-made hill in Nahuatl), is the largest pyramid base in the world by volume, with about 4.45 million cubic meters and a base of 450 by 450 meters, according to INAH. It is nearly double the volume of the Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt, and the Guinness Book of Records recognizes it as the largest monument ever built. For centuries it lay covered by vegetation, and the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Los Remedios was built on top of it; from its summit there is one of the best views of the volcanoes and the valley.
The volcanoes, with respect
From Cholula you can see Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, a breathtaking landscape. Popocatépetl is an active volcano, monitored by CENAPRED, which in 2026 keeps the volcanic alert level at Yellow Phase 2 and advises not approaching the crater. Rest easy: it's admired from a distance, from the sanctuary and the valley. It's not a place to climb, but a backdrop enjoyed from the safety of the city and its towns.
Atlixco, the Town of Flowers
Atlixco has been a Magic Town since 2015 and is known as the Town of Flowers for its tradition of nurseries and ornamental plants, favored by an almost perfect temperate climate year-round. Its main square, the Cerro de San Miguel, and colorful streets can be walked in an afternoon, and throughout the year it holds flower festivals and its famous Villa Iluminada in December. It sits under the gaze of Popocatépetl, and from several points in town the volcano appears in the background. By car you arrive straight from central Cholula without depending on bus schedules.
