Real de Catorce is a mining town in the Sierra de Catorce, at over 2,700 meters of altitude, reachable by vehicle only through the historic Ogarrio tunnel, opened in 1901 and about 2,300 meters long. The Huasteca Potosina, by contrast, is a green, humid region where the waterfalls, pits, and towns are separated by dozens of kilometers of mountain road. In both cases, depending on fixed-schedule tours ties you down; with a car, you decide.
How do you reach Real de Catorce from San Luis Potosí?
From the city of San Luis Potosí, you take Highway 57 north toward Matehuala and then turn off into the sierra through Cedral and Estación Catorce. It's about 250 km in total, around 3 hours, and the last stretch is a cobbled road climbing the mountain. To enter the town, you cross the Ogarrio tunnel: a single-lane mining structure with alternating traffic. Real de Catorce, a Magic Town since 2001, rewards those who arrive on their own: you can stay overnight, head out to the desert at dawn, or climb the Cerro del Quemado without depending on anyone.

The Ogarrio tunnel is single-lane with timed passage; arriving early avoids waits. Real de Catorce sits above 2,700 meters, so nights are cold year-round: bring a jacket even if the day is sunny.
How do you tour the Huasteca Potosina by car?
The Huasteca is toured from a base, and that base is almost always Ciudad Valles, the region's largest city, about 250 km from the capital (4 to 5 hours via Highway 70, which drops down from the sierra). From there, the attractions fan out: Xilitla and Edward James's Las Pozas are about 140 km to the south (around 2 hours); the Micos and Tamasopo waterfalls, to the west; and the Tamul waterfall —at 105 meters, the state's tallest— and the Aquismón pits, to the south and east. They're so scattered that seeing them by bus is nearly impossible; with a car, you build your own multi-day circuit.
