Why do the beach route by car and not by shared van?
The strip between Puerto Ángel and Mazunte concentrates some of the most-loved beaches on the Oaxaca coast, all within a few kilometers of each other. The problem is the connection: local public transport —vans and shared taxis— covers the stretch only partly, with irregular schedules, and stops running by late afternoon, right when you want to climb Punta Cometa to watch the sunset. With your own car or scooter, that dependence disappears. You can have breakfast in Zipolite, swim in San Agustinillo, eat in Mazunte, and stay for the sunset without worrying about how to get back.
The route: Zipolite, San Agustinillo, Mazunte, and Puerto Ángel
The backbone of this route is Federal Highway 200 and the short turnoffs to each beach. Heading west out of Zipolite, in a few minutes you reach San Agustinillo, a more sheltered cove good for swimming. A little farther, about 6-7 km from Zipolite, is Mazunte, a Magic Town since 2015, with the Mexican Turtle Center and the trail to Punta Cometa. To the east, about 4 km from Zipolite, Puerto Ángel is the fishing town with its bay and Playa del Panteón. The whole circuit fits into a relaxed day, and with your own vehicle you can do it in whatever order you prefer.
Mazunte, the turtles, and Punta Cometa: the heart of the route
Mazunte has been a Magic Town since 2015 and works as the heart of this beach route. Its symbol is the Mexican Turtle Center, a conservation center with an aquarium of marine and freshwater turtles that, according to the Tourism Secretariat and the municipality itself, displays several species and runs protection programs. On foot from town begins the trail to Punta Cometa, the promontory known as the Balcony of the Pacific, a sacred site for the region's peoples and considered one of Mexico's best sunset viewpoints. And past Mazunte, La Ventanilla offers a community boat tour through the mangrove, with crocodiles, iguanas, and birds.

One day or several? How to plan your trip
The whole strip can be covered in a single relaxed day, because the distances are short. But many travelers prefer to spread it out: one day for San Agustinillo and Puerto Ángel, another for Mazunte, Punta Cometa, and La Ventanilla, and the evenings for Zipolite's atmosphere. With your own vehicle that decision is yours and you can change it on the fly, depending on the weather, the sea flags, or simply the mood.
