Isla Mujeres by Golf Cart: The Complete 7 km Route and What It Costs in 2026 | KORU

Isla Mujeres has the most mature golf cart market in the Mexican Caribbean, and that shows in price transparency: several operators publish rate cards and seasons on their websites, something uncommon in Mexico. The 2026 ranges run between 1,300 and 1,600 pesos for 24 hours on four-seat carts, and rise notably on six-seat ones.

One detail worth copying from this market: the best operators include gas and insurance in the published price, deliver and pick up the cart at your hotel, and provide assistance all day. When you compare rates, compare that, not just the number. A cart that's 200 pesos cheaper without insurance isn't actually cheaper.

The island is 7 kilometers long and about 650 meters wide at its narrowest point. Crossing it from end to end without stopping takes between 45 minutes and an hour. With reasonable stops at the beaches, the lookout points, and Punta Sur, the full circuit takes between 3 and 5 hours, which is exactly why many travelers rent for half a day instead of 24 hours.

The geographic layout is what makes the vehicle essential: Playa Norte is at the northern tip, right next to downtown and the ferry dock, while Punta Sur is at the opposite end. Walking between the two in Caribbean heat isn't a realistic plan, and taxis add up fast if you make the trip several times a day.

The logical route runs from north to south along the east coast —the open-sea side, with the cliffs and lookout points— and returns along the west coast, calmer and lined with shallow-water beaches. Leaving early has a concrete advantage: Punta Sur is Mexico's easternmost point and the first place in the country where the sun rises.

A valid driver's license is required to rent, no exceptions. The cart drives on public roads just like any other vehicle: follow the direction of traffic, speed bumps, and speed limits, and in Quintana Roo helmet use is mandatory for motorcycles. Park only where allowed; the island's downtown is narrow, and municipal tolerance for badly parked carts keeps shrinking.

Two practical warnings that don't get talked about much. The first: most carts run on gas, and some operators deliver them with a full tank and expect them back the same way; ask beforehand. The second: in high season, from December 20 to February 28, and especially at Christmas and Easter week, booking ahead stops being optional.

Isla Mujeres led hotel occupancy in Quintana Roo with 93.5% in February 2026, confirming that its strong season is the Caribbean winter, from December to April. In July 2026 it recorded 62.8%, above the state average of 59.6%, in a summer that was especially weak for the state due to sargassum and airfare prices.

It's the most repeated question on Mexican Caribbean travel forums, and the answer depends on how much quiet you're looking for. Isla Mujeres is half an hour from Cancún, has paved streets, full services, and a lot more people. Holbox is two and a half hours plus a ferry away, has sand streets, doesn't allow cars, and feels considerably more remote.
