Isla Pasión, the World's Best Beach in 2026: How to Visit It from Cozumel | KORU

Isla Pasión is a small islet of white sand located off the northern coast of Cozumel, in sheltered waters. It is not a hotel beach or a developed stretch of coastline: it is a sandbar surrounded by shallow water, with no hotel development on it, reachable exclusively by water. That is, to a large extent, the reason it won.

The award matters because its method is not a jury. The Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice Best of the Best is calculated from the quantity and quality of the reviews travelers published during a defined period —in this edition, from November 2024 to December 2025— and the announcement was made on February 17, 2026. In other words: it is a ranking of measured satisfaction, not editorial taste.

It's worth noting the nuance. Isla Pasión is the only Mexican beach within the 2026 global ranking. That says as much about Isla Pasión as it does about the rest: major destinations in the Mexican Caribbean were left off the world list that year.

Only by water, and from Cozumel. There is no bridge, no road, and you cannot get there by golf cart, motorcycle, or car: the island is reached by boat from the northern coast of Cozumel, and access is usually operated by concessionaires who run the islet's beach club. That means the visit is organized around schedules and capacity, not like a public beach you can reach whenever you want.

The usual itinerary is: get to Cozumel by ferry from Playa del Carmen or by plane to the island's airport, make your way to the northern coast, and take the boat from there. Since the overland leg is the part each traveler has to sort out on their own, that's where it pays to choose the right vehicle carefully: Cozumel's taxis operate by zone and make long trips much more expensive.

Prices and access schedules for Isla Pasión are set by the concessionaire operator and change by season: confirm them directly before traveling.

One fact with practical consequences: no passenger ferry to Cozumel carries cars. A vehicle ferry does exist, but it operates from Puerto Morelos and is slow and expensive for a short trip. In practice, almost everyone arrives in Cozumel without a car and sorts out mobility on the island, which makes local rental something structural, not optional.

Cozumel is about 48 kilometers long by 16 kilometers wide, and that scale changes everything. From the Punta Langosta pier to Punta Sur it takes between 35 and 40 minutes each way, and driving all the way around the island takes around three hours. Taxis operate by zone, so trips to the west side, Punta Sur, and the remote beaches shoot up in price.

Rates published by Cozumel rental companies. Several operators apply a high-season surcharge between December 15 and January 15.

On requirements: the minimum age is usually 18, the deposit is made with a physical credit card —not a debit card— and ranges from 150 to 350 dollars, and for scooters several operators require at least one year of riding experience. Provisional licenses are usually rejected. Helmets are required by law.

The mental rule for Cozumel is simple: the west is for swimming and diving, because it's protected by the island and the reef; the east is for driving and sightseeing, because it faces the open sea. Almost all swimmer incidents on the island happen from ignoring that divide.

Much of the west coast lies within the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, a federally protected natural area. There, an access fee, schedules, and conduct rules apply: it is forbidden to touch or remove coral, feed fish, or use conventional sunscreen. Biodegradable sunscreen isn't a brand recommendation — it's a conservation requirement.

Tripadvisor itself points to November–April as the best window for Isla Pasión, which coincides with the Caribbean dry season: calmer seas, less rain, and practically no sargassum on the west side. Cozumel logged 54.3% hotel occupancy in July 2026, a weak summer for all of Quintana Roo, so if you travel off-season you'll find the island noticeably emptier.

The fact that the planet's best beach in 2026 is a sandbar with no hotels, reachable only by boat, says something about where traveler taste is heading. What people rewarded wasn't the infrastructure: it was the absence of any. If you go, give Cozumel more than one day, because the island around it has world-famous reefs and 48 kilometers of road that almost no one drives from end to end.
