What is a mangrove and why is it a fragile ecosystem?
Mangroves are amphibious forests that protect the coast from hurricanes and serve as a nursery for thousands of species. In Oaxaca, lagoons like Manialtepec or Chacahua depend on them. They are not simple 'swamps', they are barriers of life. Stepping on their roots or throwing trash there has a devastating impact.

Why might there be crocodiles in mangroves and lagoons?
It's their home. The river crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) naturally inhabits these coastal zones. They are not there to attack, but to regulate the ecosystem. Seeing them is a privilege, not a threat, as long as you respect their space.

Risk Signs: If you see a crocodile with its mouth open on the bank, it is regulating its temperature, but if you get too close and it launches into the water, you invaded its safety zone. Retreat.
