Playa Balandra in 2026: Capacity, Wristband, and How to Get There Without Being Overcharged | KORU

Balandra has been a Flora and Fauna Protection Area since the decree published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on November 30, 2012, and its Management Program was published on October 29, 2015. That status is what allows what makes it different from almost any other Mexican beach: it has a maximum capacity and access control.

The current scheme is 450 people per shift, with two daily shifts: one from 8:00 to 12:00 and another from 13:00 to 17:00. Entry requires a digital wristband with a QR code managed by CONANP. In practice this means Balandra is not a beach you can just show up to: you need to sort out access beforehand, especially during high season and on weekends.

This is where we need to be very explicit, because it's where most people overpay. The official rate reported by CONANP and local press is around 120 pesos per person; some sources distinguish between 120 pesos for foreigners and 60 for nationals. However, there are websites with domain names very similar to the official one that do not belong to CONANP and that sell access for between 11 and 16 dollars, that is, two or three times the real rate.

The practical recommendation is simple: before paying, verify that the site belongs to CONANP. An intermediary can be legitimate if it adds value, but paying triple for a wristband that the authority issues for 120 pesos is not a service, it is a markup.

Here's an honest tip that works against our own business: if Balandra is your only plan for the day, the Playa Bus at 60 or 80 pesos per person is unbeatable and renting a vehicle makes no sense. Renting is justified when you chain Balandra with Playa El Tecolote, the malecón, and a lookout point in the same day, or when you want to arrive before the shift opens.

Because its ecosystem is especially fragile. Balandra is a cove of shallow, warm waters with mangroves, a type of environment that degrades quickly from foot traffic, chemical sunscreens, and engine noise. The capacity limit is not a bureaucratic nuisance: it is exactly what has allowed the beach to keep looking the way it looks.

Baja California Sur has other similar restrictions worth knowing if you're going to travel around the peninsula. In Cabo Pulmo National Park, the Management Program expressly prohibits motorized vehicle traffic within the federal maritime-terrestrial zone, the 20-meter strip adjacent to the beach. It's a rule cited verbatim, not a recommendation.

High season in Baja California Sur runs from December to April, which also coincides with the official gray whale watching window. In July and August the heat is extreme, and the morning shift, from 8:00 to 12:00, clearly becomes the best option: you arrive with the tide low, calmer water, and manageable temperatures.

A sign that the area is going to be busier: domestic flight searches to La Paz for summer 2026 grew 17% according to the Booking.com report on searches made between March and May 2026. With a fixed capacity of 450 people per shift, more demand simply means you need to plan further ahead.
