What makes the Bacalar lagoon unique?
The seven-color lagoon owes its shades of blue to the varying depths and the light-sand bottom. At about 42 kilometers long it is, according to Ciencia UNAM, the largest surface freshwater body on the Yucatán Peninsula. And it hides a scientific treasure: Bacalar's stromatolites form the largest freshwater reef of their kind in the world. These living stones range from decades to more than 9,000 years old, and as a life form stromatolites are the oldest evidence of life on Earth, about 3.5 billion years old.
Travel while caring for the lagoon
Stromatolites are living stones that purify the water: don't touch, step on, or sit on them. Bacalar's Ecology Office asks that you not use sunscreen (not even biodegradable), makeup, or perfume when swimming, because they speed up the lagoon's deterioration, and on Wednesdays there's no boating so it can rest. With your own vehicle you arrive early at low-impact spots and avoid the busiest hours.
Bacalar's cenotes and how to reach each one
Los Rápidos and the Pirate Canal
Los Rápidos is about 14 kilometers south of town, in the channel that joins the Xul-Ha and Bacalar lagoons; there a gentle current forms among mangroves and stromatolites, ideal for drifting without a motor. Nearby is the Pirate Canal, with shallow waters, famous for its sulfur-clay bath that exfoliates the skin and for the history of the ships that crossed it. Both are to the south, so in a single trip in your vehicle you combine them.
The San Felipe Fort: pirates and history
In town, overlooking the lagoon, stands the San Felipe Fort: a star-shaped fortress with four bastions, completed in 1733, with 34 cannons and a moat about four meters deep —one of the few forts with a moat in Mexico. It was built to stop the Dutch, French, and English pirates who raided Bacalar seeking logwood, and later it was key in the Caste War. Today it houses the Piracy Museum and offers one of the best views of the lagoon. It's in the center, on foot; pair it with your vehicle outing to the cenotes.
When to go and how to get around to see it best?
The seven colors depend on the sun: they show most intensely from November to May, in the drier season, and mid-morning with clear skies. Sunrise and sunset are the calmest moments for the lagoon. The advantage of having your own vehicle is exactly that: you choose the hour. You head out early to Cenote Azul or a lookout before the tours, and stay until sunset without depending on a taxi passing by.
