AICM or AIFA? Differences that matter when renting
Mexico City International Airport (AICM, Benito Juárez) closed 2025 with more than 44.6 million passengers, according to terminal figures reported by A21, and sits right against the city, on the east side: convenient for downtown, but saturated and surrounded by traffic. Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) surpassed 7 million passengers in 2025, 11.5% more than the previous year, according to La Jornada Estado de México; it's about 44 km to the north, in Zumpango, more open but farther. Since March 2025, the AIFA connects to Buenavista station via the Suburban Train in about 39 minutes, a useful fact if you combine plane, train, and car.

From the AICM, the main avenues and the Circuito Interior connect you with Reforma, downtown, and the exit highways; from the AIFA, the road to Zumpango links with the Mexico City-Pachuca and Mexico City-Querétaro highways. Before planning your trips, check Hoy No Circula: according to SEDEMA, an out-of-state car without a 0 or 00 hologram has a restriction day and a 5:00-11:00 window. If the car you rent doesn't have local plates with a 0/00 hologram, get the free Tourist Pass online (7 or 14 days) before driving. Confirm which plates and hologram the fleet available in the city will have.

Save your lodging's exact address and the exit route before setting off: at the AICM the east-side traffic can be heavy, and at the AIFA it's best to leave with a clear heading toward the highway you need.

With the car in your hands, Mexico City becomes a base for the center of the country. Teotihuacán is about 50 km to the northeast; Tepoztlán, a little over an hour via the Mexico City-Cuernavaca highway; Puebla and Cholula, about two hours to the southeast; and Valle de Bravo, about three hours via the Mexico City-Toluca highway. For the city itself, remember the honest recommendation: the Metro and Metrobús move you better around downtown, so save the car for the getaways and skip the urban traffic.
