Quick answer
Renting a golf cart in Holbox costs between 1,700 and 2,800 pesos for 24 hours in 2026: street rental shops are at the low end and online booking portals at the high end. You need a valid driver's license. Driving on the beach, in the sea, and on the sandbars is prohibited, with fines and vehicle impoundment, and the responsibility also extends to the rental provider.
How much does it cost to rent a golf cart in Holbox in 2026?
The price depends almost entirely on where you book, not on which cart you get. Two markets coexist in Holbox: the physical rental shops in town, which work with counter pricing, and the online booking portals, which charge up to double for equivalent vehicles. The difference over 24 hours can exceed 1,000 pesos.

The practical takeaway is simple: if you arrive without a reservation and walk two streets from the pier, you'll pay less. If you need the certainty of having a vehicle the day you land — Christmas, Holy Week, whale shark season — booking online costs you peace of mind and about a thousand pesos. Neither choice is wrong; it helps to know which one you're making.
Why does everyone get around Holbox in a golf cart?
Because private cars don't circulate in Holbox. The island lies within the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protection Area, decreed on June 6, 1994, and recognized as a Ramsar site since 2004, and its streets are made of sand. Everyday transport is golf carts, bicycles, and feet. The golf cart service operates under a concession scheme managed by the state's mobility institute.
It's worth saying the uncomfortable part: downtown Holbox is perfectly walkable, and many travelers spend a week without renting anything. A cart is justified when you want to reach Punta Cocos, 2 kilometers to the south, or Punta Mosquito to the east, or when you travel with luggage, with children, or with the intention of watching the sunset far from town without walking back in the dark.
Where is it prohibited to drive a golf cart in Holbox?
This is the rule that generates the most fines and appears the least in guides. It is prohibited to drive golf carts and bicycles on the beach, in the sea, and on the sandbars of Holbox. The penalty includes a fine and impoundment of the vehicle, and responsibility does not fall only on the driver: it also extends to the service provider that rented it.
What do you need to rent a golf cart in Holbox?
A valid driver's license, first of all, and an ID. Most rental shops also ask for a security deposit or to hold a document; it's worth asking in writing which document the rental shop keeps and when it returns it, because leaving your passport as a deposit is a common practice in the area and it's not always a good idea to accept it.
Also ask, before signing, whether the price includes insurance and exactly what it covers. It's the variable with the most fine print in the market: in much of the country insurance is sold as an extra or simply doesn't exist, and you only find out when something happens. A contract with the coverage written out is worth more than a hundred-peso discount.
How do you get to Holbox and how much does the ferry cost?
Ferries every hour, approximately from 06:00 to 21:30. Rates verified in March 2026 and confirmed in July 2026.
“In Holbox, the cart is neither a luxury nor an obligation: it's the difference between seeing the town and seeing the island.”

Cart, bike, or walking? How to decide
What can you NOT reach by golf cart?
Everything that's in the water. Isla Pájaros, Isla de la Pasión, the Yalahau lagoon, swimming with whale sharks during their season, and the bioluminescence tours are done exclusively by boat, with local operators authorized within the reserve. No cart reaches those points, and no boat travels the town's streets. Planning the trip with that clear division avoids wasted days.
The official whale shark season runs approximately from May 15 to the end of September, with the highest concentration in July and August. The activity is regulated by CONANP: operators require a permit, there is a code of conduct that prohibits touching the animal, and the number of swimmers per boat is limited.

What decides the price is the channel, not the cart
Two people can rent the same model on the same day in Holbox and pay a thousand pesos difference. The only variable that explains it is where they booked. Now you know the two price bands, you know which documents they'll ask you for, and you know where you can't drive. With that, the conversation at the counter changes completely.
