Renting a car in Guanajuato 2026: the city of tunnels is walked, the region is driven | KORU

Guanajuato's capital was born from silver. In the 18th century its mines came to produce an enormous share of the world's silver, and that wealth raised the temples, theaters, and alleyways that are now a World Heritage Site: UNESCO inscribed the Historic City of Guanajuato and Adjacent Mines in 1988. But the city was built in a narrow ravine, between hills, following the course of a river. The result is a beautiful, pedestrian old town, with streets that climb, drop, and twist, where a car gets in the way more than it helps.

So why a car? For everything outside that ravine. Guanajuato is an extraordinary base in the Bajío: in under an hour you have Cristo Rey on Cerro del Cubilete, the Independence route toward Dolores Hidalgo, San Miguel de Allende, the city of León, and the mining estates. None of that links up well by public transport. With a car you arrive comfortably, leave your luggage where you're staying, and head out into the region at your own pace. You can, but let's be honest: it isn't pleasant or advisable for the visitor. Guanajuato is famous for its network of underground tunnels —nearly nine kilometers in total— opened over the old riverbed of the Guanajuato River to move traffic off the surface, according to reports about the city (Infobae). Cars circulate through them beneath the center, with exits and entrances that confuse anyone who isn't a local. Above, the alleyways are narrow, steep, and many are pedestrian-only; the Callejón del Beso is barely a meter wide. Parking in the historic center is expensive and scarce.

The airport that serves the Guanajuato capital is Bajío International Airport (BJX), in the municipality of Silao de la Victoria, operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP). In 2025 it closed with around 3.3 million passengers, after about 3.17 million in 2024, according to figures published by GAP, and it launched a modernization plan of over 2,881 million pesos for 2025-2029 (La Jornada). From there, the Guanajuato capital is about 30 kilometers away, roughly 20 to 30 minutes via Federal Highway 45 and the León-Silao-Guanajuato axis. With your own car you arrive straight at your lodging without depending on taxis or schedules.

This is where the car becomes essential. About 30 kilometers away is Cristo Rey, atop Cerro del Cubilete, a 20-meter monument marking roughly the geographic center of Mexico (at 2,700 meters altitude). To the north begins the Independence Route: Dolores Hidalgo, the cradle of Independence, about 55 kilometers away, and San Miguel de Allende, a colonial gem and also a World Heritage Site, just under 100 kilometers. And very close to the center, the La Valenciana mine and church recall where all that silver came from. Each point is spread across the sierra and the Bajío; with a car you link them at your own pace.

As a reference for planning your days: from Bajío Airport (BJX) to central Guanajuato it's about 30 km (20-30 min); to Cristo Rey, about 30 km via the mountain road; to León, about 55 km (close to an hour); to Dolores Hidalgo, about 55 km (about an hour); and to San Miguel de Allende, about 97 km (close to 1 h 40). With these distances in mind, it's easy to plan half-day or full-day outings and return to sleep in Guanajuato.
