Mérida is the capital of Yucatán and the great cultural hub of southeastern Mexico. It's called the White City for its limestone colonial facades, and it boasts the Paseo de Montejo —an avenue inspired by the Champs-Élysées in Paris— and the Great Museum of the Maya World. It also ranks repeatedly as Mexico's safest city: in the 2025 urban-safety rankings it topped the list with a very low homicide rate, and according to INEGI it remains among the capitals with the lowest perception of insecurity in the country. That makes it an ideal base for driving. But the best of Yucatán doesn't fit inside the city: the ruins, the cenotes, and the magic towns are dozens of kilometers away, each in its own direction.

How do you get from Mérida airport to downtown?
Mérida International Airport, Manuel Crescencio Rejón (code MID), is southwest of the city, less than 10 kilometers from the historic center: by car it's just 15 to 20 minutes. It's operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), the same group as Cancún and Cozumel, and in 2024 it handled more than 3.6 million passengers, with a monthly record in July 2025, according to ASUR and the Diario de Yucatán. From there, the ring road (Periférico) circles the city and connects you to the highways toward Uxmal (south), Progreso (north), Izamal and the cenotes (east), and Celestún (west). Leaving with your own vehicle leaves you ready to move from day one.
Tip
Save your lodging's address and locate it relative to the Centro and the Paseo de Montejo before leaving the airport. Mérida has a grid of numbered streets (even one way, odd the other); knowing your street intersection saves you loops on arrival.
What can you do from Mérida with a car?
Mérida is an unbeatable base because it has everything around it, but in opposite directions. To the south, the Uxmal archaeological site —a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996— is about 80 km away, and from there the Puuc Route begins with Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak, and Labná. To the east, the ring of cenotes of Homún and Cuzamá is an hour away (~55 km), and Izamal, the Yellow City and a Magic Town, about 70 km. To the north, Progreso and its boardwalk are about 36 km. And to the west, Celestún and its flamingos, about 90 km. None connects well with another by public transport: by car you link them at your own pace.
