Morelia is the capital of Michoacán and one of Mexico's best-preserved colonial cities: its historic center, with more than 200 pink-stone buildings, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. Walking among the Cathedral, the 253-arch aqueduct, and the plazas is a plan in itself. But what makes Michoacán great doesn't fit in the center: Lake Pátzcuaro, the Purépecha towns, and the monarch sanctuaries are dozens of kilometers away, spread out and with limited public transport between them.

With a rented car, Morelia changes size. You can have breakfast facing the Cathedral, spend the morning in a lakeside town, eat fish in Pátzcuaro, and return without depending on bus schedules or fixed-departure tours. General Francisco J. Mújica International Airport (code MLM) is in the municipality of Álvaro Obregón, about 27 kilometers from downtown Morelia, around 30 minutes by car. It's operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), which reported more than 1.5 million passengers in 2025 and ranked it among its fastest-growing terminals for international traffic. From the airport, the highway connects directly to the city and, to the west, to the exit toward Pátzcuaro, and to the east, to the route to the monarch sanctuaries. Leaving with your own car makes you ready to move from day one.

Morelia is an unbeatable base because it has everything around it. To the west, Pátzcuaro —a Magic Town beside its lake, famous for the Day of the Dead on Janitzio island— is about an hour away. On the lake's shore are Tzintzuntzan, with its Purépecha yácatas, and nearby Santa Clara del Cobre, the cradle of copperwork. To the east, toward Angangueo and Ocampo, the monarch butterfly sanctuaries open up (season from November to March). And to the north, Lake Cuitzeo and Capula, a land of crafts. All of that links up when you drive.

As a reference for planning your days: from the airport to the center it's about 27 km (30 min); to Pátzcuaro, about 60 km (around 1 hour); to Tzintzuntzan, about 50 km; to Santa Clara del Cobre, about 79 km; and to the monarch sanctuaries (El Rosario and Sierra Chincua, toward Angangueo and Ocampo), about 150 km, around 2h30 climbing via Zitácuaro. The main roads are well-signposted toll and free highways; it's good to carry some cash for tolls. With these distances in mind, it's easy to plan full-day outings without rushing.
