Quick answer
Renting a car in Puerto Ángel is the most practical way to explore this stretch of the Oaxaca coast: Puerto Ángel is an old fishing port that works as a gateway to the beaches of Zipolite, San Agustinillo, Mazunte, and Punta Cometa, all a few kilometers away. The town has no airport: the nearest are Huatulco (about 45 minutes) and Puerto Escondido (about an hour). With a car or a scooter you chain the whole coast at your own pace. KORU RENT already operates on this same coast, in Puerto Escondido, and is preparing its arrival in Puerto Ángel.
Why is renting a car in Puerto Ángel worth it?
Puerto Ángel is a small town with a big history: it was the busiest port in Oaxaca around 1870, when it shipped coffee and fine woods, and it has been considered an open port since 1868, according to the Oaxaca Tourism Ministry. Today it remains, above all, a fishing port on a calm bay, in the municipality of San Pedro Pochutla, with beaches like Playa Panteón and Estacahuite ideal for swimming and snorkeling. But its real value for the traveler is its position: it is the gateway to a whole stretch of beaches spread along the coast.
With a rented vehicle, that stretch becomes yours. You can have breakfast facing Puerto Ángel's bay, swim in the morning at Estacahuite, eat fish in San Agustinillo, and watch the sunset at Punta Cometa without depending on colectivos or other people's schedules. That is the same principle that drives KORU RENT: giving you real autonomy over your trip, with a vehicle that adapts to your plan and not the other way around.
How do you get to Puerto Ángel if it has no airport?
Puerto Ángel has no airport of its own, so almost everyone arrives by air at one of the coast's two airports and continues by road. The nearest is Bahías de Huatulco International Airport (HUX), about 40-50 km away (45 minutes to an hour), which handled 801,803 passengers in 2025 according to Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR). The other is Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM), about 85-90 km away (around an hour and a half), with nearly 950 thousand passengers in 2025 according to the airport's own data. From either one, Federal Highway 200 is the backbone of the coast, and from Pochutla to Puerto Ángel it is just 9 km along Highway 175.
Tip
Save your lodging's exact address and the beach name before leaving the airport: the cell signal weakens on some stretches of Highway 200 and the descent into Puerto Ángel, and having the route downloaded saves you loops when arriving in the afternoon.
What can you do from Puerto Ángel with a car?
Puerto Ángel is an unbeatable base because it has the whole Riviera Oaxaqueña around it and close by. Zipolite, Mexico's only legal nudist beach, is about 4-5 km away (10-15 minutes). San Agustinillo, good for swimming and snorkeling, about 8 km. Mazunte, a Pueblo Mágico since 2015 according to its municipal government, about 10-12 km, with the Mexican Sea Turtle Center and the Punta Cometa lookout, the southernmost point of Oaxaca and one of the best sunsets in the country. A bit farther, La Ventanilla and its mangrove lagoon. And to the east, the bays of Huatulco, about 50 km. All of that opens up when you drive.
