Zipolite is a small beach —about a kilometer and a half of golden sand— within the municipality of San Pedro Pochutla, on the Oaxaca coast, between Puerto Escondido and Huatulco. But what makes it special doesn't fit in its strip of sand alone: a few kilometers away are San Agustinillo, Mazunte, Puerto Ángel, the Punta Cometa viewpoint, and the La Ventanilla mangrove. These are all separate spots, spread along Highway 200, and the local public transport —the shared vans— covers them only partly and stops running early. Without your own vehicle, every outing depends on someone else's schedule.

With a rented vehicle, this coast changes size. You can have breakfast in Zipolite, spend the morning in San Agustinillo, eat fish in Mazunte, and climb Punta Cometa for the sunset without negotiating fares or rushing for the last shared van. Zipolite has no airport of its own. The two nearest are Huatulco International Airport (HUX), about 41 km via Highway 200 —close to 1 hour— and Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM), about 74 km —also around 1 hour— according to route times reported by services like Rome2Rio. From either one, Federal Highway 200 is the coast's backbone: paved, signposted, with the turnoff to Puerto Ángel and Zipolite clearly marked. Arriving with your own vehicle saves you from depending on scheduled transfers and leaves you mobile from the first moment.

Zipolite is a perfect base because it has a whole string of beaches around it, minutes away. San Agustinillo, the calm cove for swimming, is about 2-3 km away. Mazunte, a Magic Town since 2015 and home of the Mexican Turtle Center, is about 6-7 km away. In Mazunte begins the trail to Punta Cometa, the promontory known as the Balcony of the Pacific and one of the country's best sunset viewpoints. Puerto Ángel, the fishing town with its bay, is about 4 km away. And a little beyond Mazunte, La Ventanilla offers boat tours through the mangrove. All of that links up easily when you drive.

Zipolite is famous for being Mexico's first and only legal public beach for nudism: the municipality declared the practice permitted on the main beach and the adjacent Playa del Amor. It's also an openly inclusive destination, with roots in the 1970s hippie culture and today a much-loved meeting point for the LGBT+ community, as reported by outlets like El Universal and official portals like Visit Mexico. The key to enjoying it is simple: naturalness and respect. Nudism is optional, no one is required, and it's best to avoid photographing others without permission. With your own car you can arrive calmly and choose your own pace.

It must be said clearly: Zipolite has strong surf and dangerous rip currents. Its name, of Zapotec origin, is usually translated as beach of the dead precisely because of its currents, which is why it's popularly known as the beach of death. The good news is that there's a flag system and a corps of volunteer lifeguards —the Club Delfines, with nearly two decades of altruistic service, according to El Universal Oaxaca— who patrol and mark the dangerous zones. The rule is simple: only swim where they tell you to, respect the red flag (which means no entry), and don't underestimate the sea even when it looks calm. Having your own car also lets you choose a more sheltered beach like San Agustinillo for swimming.
