How do you get around Bacalar?
The town of Bacalar is small and walkable, with its square, the San Felipe Fort, and the promenade overlooking the lagoon. But what makes the destination famous is spread out: Cenote Azul is right off the highway to the south, Los Rápidos is about 14 kilometers away, and several cenotes and lookouts are reached by dirt roads. Without a vehicle you depend on taxis or tours for each outing.
Bacalar has been a Magic Town since 2006, according to the Tourism Secretariat (Sectur), and its seven-color lagoon is the largest surface freshwater body on the Yucatán Peninsula, according to Ciencia UNAM. It's a calmer, less developed destination than the northern Caribbean, ideal for taking your time and going on your own.
How do you get to Bacalar?
Bacalar is in southern Quintana Roo, far from Cancún: about 320 kilometers, nearly four hours by road. Today there are two convenient entry points: the Maya Train, with a Bacalar station about 15 minutes from the center, and Chetumal airport, some 40 kilometers away. The ADO bus goes straight to the center. Once there, your own vehicle solves the outings to Cenote Azul, Los Rápidos, and the surrounding cenotes.
Which vehicle should you rent in Bacalar?
It depends on your plan. For the town and the lagoon road, a scooter is nimble and economical. For Cenote Azul, Los Rápidos, or coming with family and gear, a car or a pickup with air conditioning goes further. And if you want to reach cenotes on dirt roads, a 4x4 jeep gives you traction. Either way, renting a vehicle in Bacalar frees you from pricing each outing separately.

Los Rápidos is about 14 km south of town and some cenotes are reached by dirt road. Set off with gas and cash: outside the center there are few ATMs and gas stations.
