In 2025 the island received some 4.7 million cruise passengers (around 1,300 arrivals), according to the Quintana Roo Integral Port Administration (APIQROO), which ranks it as the number-one cruise port in Mexico and Central America. Add to that those who arrive by ferry from Playa del Carmen. They all share the same need: to cover the island in a few hours.
How do you get to Cozumel: ferry or cruise?
There are two ways. By cruise, you disembark at the western terminals. By ferry from Playa del Carmen, the crossing takes about 30 to 40 minutes, departs every half hour between 7:30 and 22:00, and costs around 250 pesos each way; it's run by Ultramar and Winjet. The key detail: the passenger ferry doesn't carry your car, so almost everyone arrives on foot and rents the vehicle on the island.
Which vehicle should you rent in Cozumel?
It depends on your plan. To get around San Miguel and the western beaches, a scooter is enough. To drive the full island loop and reach the east coast and Punta Sur, a jeep is the favorite: open-air, with traction and no mileage limit.
