The most common way in is Cancún Airport, about 55 kilometers away on Federal Highway 307, a 45-minute to one-hour transfer. The Maya Train also arrives, with a station in Playa del Carmen, and the ADO bus reaches downtown. And from here the ferry to Cozumel departs, about 30 minutes. Once in town, your own vehicle solves the outings to the cenotes, Akumal, and Tulum without depending on schedules.
Which vehicle should you rent in Playa del Carmen?
It depends on your plan. To move only around downtown and the beach, you hardly need a vehicle. But as soon as you want to head down to the cenotes, swim with turtles in Akumal, or take a getaway to Tulum, a car with air conditioning is the best option; a pickup if you travel in a group or with snorkel gear. A scooter works for the town and nearby beaches. Either way, renting a vehicle in Playa del Carmen gives you autonomy over the corridor without depending on tours.

The cenotes start a few kilometers south (Chaak Tun about 2 km, Cristalino about 10 km) and Akumal is about 40 minutes away. With your own car you chain them in a day; by colectivo or tour you're tied to schedules.
