Why does everyone in Sayulita use a golf cart?
Many people assume it's because of distance, and they're wrong: downtown Sayulita can be walked end to end in 10 to 20 minutes. The real reason is the hills. The neighborhoods where much of the lodging is located -Gringo Hill, Nanzal, the north zone and Los Muertos- sit on steep slopes, and climbing them with luggage, surfboards or kids under the Nayarit sun is another story. It's no coincidence that local operators sell lithium carts advertised literally as 'made for the hills'.
The second reason is regulatory, and it's the one almost nobody explains to you before booking: since 2025, downtown Sayulita closes to vehicle traffic from Friday to Sunday starting at noon. Cars are left out, but golf carts keep circulating without restriction. It's a real competitive moat: whoever arrives by car loses access to downtown on exactly the three busiest days.
And there's a third, very concrete reason: in Sayulita there is practically no car rental. The town's mobility market is built around the golf cart, with thirteen operators documented in just the main local directory.

Pay attention to the minimum number of days: almost all operators require two or three, so a one-night getaway can't always be handled with a golf cart. And watch out for VAT, which in several price lists in the area is added separately at 16%.
What can and can't you do with a golf cart in Sayulita?
About the ban on Federal Highway 200, it's worth being transparent: it's a rule that local operators and hotels consistently repeat, but we did not find the state regulation article that backs it up in writing. Treat it as an established practice and confirm it with your rental company before attempting the trip.
How do you get to Sayulita from Puerto Vallarta?
Puerto Vallarta's airport is about 40 kilometers away. If your plan is to stay in Sayulita for several days, the most efficient combination is usually bus or Uber on arrival and a golf cart once in town, avoiding the 150-to-250-peso-a-day parking cost that comes with bringing a car.

What to do in Sayulita and San Pancho?
Sayulita is surf, market and street life: the main beach has gentle waves ideal for learning, and the town concentrates surf schools, shops and restaurants. San Pancho, a few kilometers away via Federal Highway 200, is its calm counterpoint, with a much less crowded beach, a community atmosphere and its own cultural scene. It's common to stay in one and visit the other.
The area's star plan is the Marietas Islands, and there are strict rules worth knowing before booking: access is limited to 116 people per day, in groups of 15, with visits of about 30 minutes, and the site closes Mondays and Tuesdays. Only authorized companies operate there. If someone sells you a trip without a quota or authorization, it isn't legal.

When is the best time to go?
Nayarit's high season runs from November to April, and the rental price lists themselves confirm it: in San Pancho the golf cart costs 1,100 pesos a day in that window and 900 between May and October. December to April also coincides with the official humpback whale watching season on the Mexican Pacific, which according to the notice published in the Official Gazette runs from December 8 to April 30 in Nayarit and Jalisco.
Punta Mita, a short distance along the coast, appears among the Mexican beaches identified as a 2026 travel trend in Booking.com's annual survey, conducted among nearly 30,000 people in 33 countries. It's a sign that the Riviera Nayarit is going to be busier, not less.
