Cozumel sits at the heart of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef in the world, with world-famous sites like Palancar and Punta Sur inside the Cozumel Reefs National Park. Even if you don't dive, the western beach clubs look out over that same crystal-clear sea.
The west coast: reefs, beach clubs, and calm
It's the gentle face of the island. The sea is flat and transparent, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, or diving. Here you'll find Chankanaab park, the beach clubs, and access points to reefs like Palancar. It's the area to spend the morning in the water before continuing the circuit south.
The south and east coast: Punta Sur and the wild side
At the southern tip is Punta Sur, an ecological park with a lighthouse, lagoon, crocodiles, and reef. Turning north along the east coast, everything changes: the sea opens up, the wind blows, and the waves break hard. It's the most photogenic and solitary part, with beach bars among the dunes and lookouts like El Mirador. Here you admire the sea more than you swim: the currents are strong and only some coves are safe.

Fill up on gas in San Miguel (there's almost none on the east coast), carry cash for entrances and beach bars, use biodegradable sunscreen near the reefs, and respect the flags: on the east coast the currents are strong.
