Quick answer
Car rental in Morelia isn't needed for downtown; it is for Lake Pátzcuaro, about 60 km away, and for the monarch butterfly sanctuaries, about 150 km away and open from November to March. KORU has no vehicles listed in Morelia today; to hear from us if that changes, leave your email on the destinations map at korurent.com. The airport is about 27 km out, with taxis and rental desks in arrivals.
Car rental in Morelia: how many days do you need?
Ask yourself one question: how many days will you spend outside the city? If the answer is zero, don't rent: the Cathedral, the Aqueduct and the Calzada Fray Antonio de San Miguel are all within walking distance. For the lake or the mountains the math changes, because between Pátzcuaro, Tzintzuntzan and the sanctuaries the bus makes you plan your day around its departures. Our take: outside monarch season, one car day, the lake day, is enough.
From Morelia airport to the historic center
General Francisco J. Mújica International Airport (MLM) is in Álvaro Obregón, about 27 km from Morelia, according to Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico. In the arrivals hall there are two taxi services that run around the clock and desks for several rental companies: if you were planning to rent a car at Morelia airport, that's where they are. The historic center has been a World Heritage Site since 1991, with more than 200 buildings in pink stone (cantera rosa), according to UNESCO. Before you fly, ask your hotel or host for the exact address of the parking lot its guests use and drive straight there.
What to check with any rental company in Morelia
If you rent at the arrivals desks or in town, Profeco, Mexico's consumer protection agency, recommends checking the points below in its 26 July 2026 statement; a contract's registration can be looked up in the RPCA, Profeco's own Public Registry of Standard-Form Contracts. Our advice for the mountains: video the car, bodywork and interior, before you drive off, and make sure it has a spare tire and that the heating works.
Pátzcuaro and the monarchs: day trips from Morelia
To the west lie Lake Pátzcuaro and its villages; to the east, the monarch mountains. Last season, according to Conanp, El Rosario, Sierra Chincua and Senguio opened from 22 November to 31 March, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with local guides and a maximum of 18 minutes inside the sanctuary. At El Rosario and Sierra Chincua, you go up to the butterflies on foot or on horseback from the visitor center, according to the Michoacán state government. Bring a jacket: mornings in the mountains are cold. Janitzio's Night of the Dead, on 1 and 2 November, usually falls before the sanctuaries open.
Heads up
Before you hit the road, check your country's travel advisory. Canada's (16 October 2026) advises avoiding non-essential travel to Michoacán, except the cities of Morelia and Pátzcuaro; Tzintzuntzan, Santa Clara and the monarch mountains are not part of that exception. For the whole country, the same advisory recommends not traveling after dark and using only toll roads; save 078, the Ángeles Verdes number.

With KORU, not in Morelia. Where KORU does have vehicles, delivery to where you're staying or to an airport depends on the vehicle and the provider, and the cost varies by location; the team confirms it with you beforehand. Morelia airport has rental company desks.
We don't recommend it: they're on opposite sides of Morelia, and you reach the monarchs on a mountain road. Better one day for each: the lake, any time of year; the sanctuaries, only in season, leaving early to get back in daylight.
Yes. Last season, Conanp also opened Piedra Herrada, in San Mateo Almomoloa, State of Mexico, on the same dates as El Rosario, Sierra Chincua and Senguio. For any of the four, check your country's travel advisory first.
Your valid driver's license, from Mexico or another country; it's the only document we ask for. You confirm your email with a 6-digit code, pay, and then verify your license online with a selfie. For cars, the minimum age is usually 21.
Yes, you pay the full amount when you book, in pesos, by card or Apple Pay; no cash or transfers. The deposit is not a charge: it's a hold on your card, released after the return is checked, if there's no damage or pending charge.
