Quick answer
Guelaguetza 2027 would fall on Monday, July 19 and Monday, July 26, but those dates are likely, not official: Oaxaca's state government hasn't published them yet. They follow custom: the first Monday after July 16 and its Octava. To get in, in 2026 there were shows at 10:00 and 17:00 each Monday; palcos A and B were sold only on Superboletos and sold out in under an hour, while C and D were free. From Puerto Escondido you drive up in about 2.5 hours on the highway.
When is Guelaguetza 2027, and where do the dates come from?
The mistake is waiting for the official announcement to start planning: the rule goes back to colonial times. According to the Oaxaca state government's official Guelaguetza site, the popular celebration was held starting the Monday after July 16 and repeated eight days later, in what's called the Octava. That's how 2026 played out: the 16th fell on a Thursday and the Mondays were July 20 and 27. In 2027 the 16th is a Friday, so custom points to July 19 and 26. Treat them as likely until the government publishes the program; in 2026 they had already been announced by May 12.
Tickets: how to buy them and which palcos are free
Palcos A and B, the paid seating sections, cost money and go fast; C and D are free. In 2026, sales were only on Superboletos.com, with a limit of two tickets per cardholder, and A and B sold out on June 1 in under an hour, according to Oaxaca's tourism ministry. For 2027 there are no prices or sale dates yet. If you don't land a paid seat, we'd head to the free palcos with plenty of time, water and a cap.
What else is on in July, and how crowded does Oaxaca get?
About 149,000 tourists in two weeks: that's what Oaxaca's tourism ministry expected from July 17 to 27, 2026, with 83% hotel occupancy. The two Mondays at the Auditorio Guelaguetza, on Cerro del Fortín, are the main event, but the festival runs all month: in 2026 there were convites, street processions starting from the Cruz de Piedra, two Calendas de las Culturas parades and more than 140 activities. Our advice: lock in your lodging before the car and sleep in the city, so you don't drive down the sierra at night.
From Puerto Escondido to Oaxaca by car on the highway
It's about 2.5 hours on the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway, versus nearly 6.5 on the old road through Sola de Vega. Mexico's federal government presented it as a 4-hour saving between the state capital and Puerto Escondido: about 104 km with two toll plazas, ten bridges and three tunnels, open since February 2024. The full details are in our guide to the new highway. On a Guelaguetza weekend, add time for the traffic getting into the city.
Which vehicle to rent in Puerto Escondido for the drive up?
A car or an SUV: it's hours of highway and mountain curves with luggage, and an ATV isn't built for that. KORU has no vehicles in Oaxaca City, so your rental starts in Puerto Escondido. On korurent.com you enter your dates, see only what's available and get the total with VAT and the deposit before paying. You confirm your email with a 6-digit code and pay the full amount by card or Apple Pay. Then you verify your driver's license with a photo of the front and back plus a selfie, and sign the contract.
Heads up
Whether a vehicle rented in Puerto Escondido can go up to Oaxaca depends on the vehicle and the provider: confirm it with the team on WhatsApp before paying. Tolls, fines and any charges on the road are on you.
“Our rule for the Guelaguetza: the car is for the highway, not for the hill. Leave Puerto in daylight, park it at your lodging and walk or take a taxi up to the Fortín.”

Your valid driver's license, from Mexico or another country; it's the only document required. You verify it online after paying, with a photo of the front and back and a selfie. For cars, the minimum age is generally 21.
By the day: each day is 24 hours from your pickup time, from 1 to 30 days. If you pick up on Sunday, three days let you drive up that day, see the Lunes del Cerro and come back down in daylight on Tuesday, without rushing. You choose the time when you book, within the provider's hours.
Only if they're registered on the contract. An additional driver has a cost that depends on the vehicle, and the team confirms it, so mention it before paying if you'll take turns at the wheel. Whoever drives also needs a valid license.
