Getting to Puerto Escondido today is easier than ever. Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM), about 2 kilometers from downtown, handled 948,590 passengers in 2025, up 11.58% from 2024, with seasonal international routes to cities like Toronto, Dallas, or Houston, according to the airport's own data. If you come by road from the city of Oaxaca, the new Barranca Larga-Ventanilla highway (about 104 km, opened in February 2024) cut the drive from about 6.5 hours to around 2.5 hours, according to the SICT; keep about 468 pesos handy for the two tollbooths. Once on the coast, plan your times well: the Mazunte, Punta Cometa, and Playa Mermejita area is around 1 to 1.5 hours from Puerto Escondido, not twenty or forty minutes as is sometimes claimed.

It's better to name a few confirmed places than to invent routes. Punta Cometa, in Mazunte, is the southernmost point of the state of Oaxaca: a lookout famous for its sunsets and for whale and dolphin watching, which in winter runs until March, according to the Mazunte town council. Very close by, Playa Mermejita is the first beach west of Punta Cometa, just over 1.2 kilometers from downtown Mazunte. This whole area is around 1 to 1.5 hours from Puerto Escondido. Further west lies Lagunas de Chacahua National Park, and toward Tonameca, the Playa Escobilla Sanctuary: two protected areas best enjoyed with a local guide, not by driving your vehicle onto the sand.

On the Oaxaca coast the rainy season runs from June to October, with September the wettest month, according to the region's climate records; and hurricane season stretches from June to November. It's not a theoretical risk: Hurricane Erick made landfall on June 19, 2025 as a Category 3 near Pinotepa Nacional, about 75 kilometers south of Puerto Escondido, with winds of around 205 km/h and damage in 36 municipalities, according to the Government of Oaxaca. In heavy rain, dirt roads turn dangerous and rivers can rise. It's better not to head to a remote beach if the forecast shows storms, if it's already night or close to sunset, if the group is tired, if the vehicle has shown a fault, or if you have no signal and told no one where you were going.
