Quick answer
Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido comes down to the sea you're after. To swim in calm water with your hotel and services close by, pick Huatulco: nine bays and its hotel zone in Tangolunda. For surf and small-town life, pick Puerto Escondido, where Zicatela is for watching, not swimming. Heads up: in Puerto Escondido you can rent a vehicle with KORU; in Huatulco, you can't. They're 100 to 110 km apart on Federal Highway 200.
Huatulco vs Puerto Escondido: it comes down to swimming
The common mistake is thinking of them as two versions of the same beach. Huatulco is nine bays with 36 beaches, several with calm water: Maguey and La Entrega are the ones we pick for swimming with kids. Puerto Escondido is open ocean. At Zicatela, the so-called Mexican Pipeline, the wave breaks right on the shore and people drown every year; you swim in the coves instead: Puerto Angelito, Manzanillo and Carrizalillo. In exchange, Puerto has been a World Surfing Reserve since 2026, and from April to October you can watch top-level surfing from the sand.
The vibe: planned resort versus surf town
Out of every 100 tourists who checked into hotels in Huatulco between January and June 2026, 13 came from abroad; in Puerto Escondido, not even two, according to Sectur Oaxaca. Huatulco is one of Fonatur's Integrally Planned Centers, with a hotel zone in Tangolunda, and it has the highest hotel occupancy in the state: 66 %. Puerto Escondido revolves around Zicatela: it got more tourists that semester, 620,594 versus 474,024, but they stay less, 1.6 nights versus 2.9. Each tourist spends almost twice as much per day in Huatulco. Our take: Huatulco for a quiet week, Puerto for heading out every day.
Which airport should you fly into?
The one where you'll be sleeping: the two are about two hours apart by road. From January to June 2026, Puerto Escondido's airport handled 516,180 passengers, 11 % more than a year earlier, and Huatulco's 419,134, according to Sectur Oaxaca. Both have routes to Mexico City, AIFA, Guadalajara and Monterrey. Abroad, that semester Huatulco had flights to Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Dallas and Chicago; Puerto, to Houston, Dallas, Calgary and Toronto. PXM, Puerto's airport, is about five kilometers from Zicatela; if you rent with KORU, delivery there depends on the vehicle and the provider.
Heads up
KORU doesn't have any vehicles listed in Huatulco, so if you're staying there you can't rent with us. To get around, count on taxis, which charge fixed fares, and boats for the western bays; Uber isn't an option. Leave your email on the destinations map at korurent.com and we'll let you know if that changes.
“Our rule: to swim without moving the car all week, Huatulco. For surf, dinner in La Punta and a different beach every day, Puerto Escondido, and from there Huatulco fits in as a day trip.”

Getting around each one, with or without a vehicle
In Puerto Escondido you rent on korurent.com: you enter your dates, only available vehicles show up and you see the total before paying; each day is 24 hours from when you pick it up. With kids, a cooler and an umbrella, a car or SUV with A/C; for dirt roads, something taller or an ATV. In Huatulco you get by with taxis and boats: San Agustín is 29 km from La Crucecita, and Chachacual can only be reached by boat from Santa Cruz. Each ride is paid separately, and on a three-bay day that adds up.
Huatulco as a day trip from Puerto Escondido
It's doable if you do the math first: 100 to 110 km on Federal Highway 200, about two hours each way. Leave early, head straight to Maguey for a swim and don't try more than two bays: all nine won't fit in a day. Drive back in daylight, because the 200 at night, with speed bumps and curves, is twice as tiring. Before booking, ask the team whether your vehicle can make the trip: it depends on the vehicle and the provider. An ATV is a bad idea, because on the federal highway it can only ride on the shoulder.

It's 100 to 110 km east on Federal Highway 200: about two hours by car. Along the way you pass Mazunte and Zipolite, about 67 and 70 km from Puerto. Leave and come back in daylight, because that stretch is much more tiring at night.

It depends on the vehicle and the provider, so confirm it with the team before booking. If it's allowed, each day is 24 hours from pickup time, only the people registered on the contract can drive, and tolls and fines are on you.
We don't recommend it. Under Mexico's federal traffic regulations, an ATV may only ride on the shoulder of a federal highway like the 200, and it's about two hours each way. For Huatulco, take a car or an SUV; the ATV makes more sense on the dirt roads near Puerto.
Your valid driver's license, from Mexico or another country: it's the only document required. Before paying, you confirm your email with a 6-digit code; afterwards, you verify your license with a photo of the front, one of the back and a selfie. The minimum age depends on the vehicle.
