Quick answer
Is Mazunte and Punta Cometa worth it in one day from Puerto Escondido in 2026? Yes. Punta Cometa is the southernmost point of the state of Oaxaca and offers one of the best sunsets on the Mexican Pacific. KORU does not rent in Mazunte yet, but it operates nearby, in Puerto Escondido: join the waitlist.
How do you get to Mazunte from Puerto Escondido?
Mazunte is about 60–67 km from Puerto Escondido along Federal Highway 200, via the San Antonio junction; by car that is 1 to 1.5 hours (Mazunte town hall). The closest airport is Huatulco (HUX), about 40 km away; Puerto Escondido (PXM) is around 65 km. The road has curves and slopes, so drive calmly.
No car? There is a colectivo or van along Highway 200 to the San Antonio junction (about 55–68 MXN, 60–90 min) and from there a 'chivera' or colectivo to Mazunte for about 20 MXN; the colectivos from San Antonio to Mazunte only run until around 19:00. The Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway (104.3 km, opened February 2024) cut the Oaxaca de Juárez–coast trip from about 6.5 to 2.5 hours (CAPUFE).
What is Punta Cometa and why its sunset?
Punta Cometa is the southernmost point of the state of Oaxaca (15°39′30″N 96°33′22″W), in Mazunte, municipality of Santa María Tonameca (Wikipedia). It is not the southernmost point of Mexico: that is the mouth of the Suchiate River, in Chiapas. It is a cliff-hill regarded as a pre-Hispanic ceremonial site and one of the best sunset viewpoints on the Pacific. Access is on foot only, along a 15–25 minute trail from the village; there is no vehicle access and no shops at the point.

What else can you do in Mazunte?
Mazunte has been a Pueblo Mágico since September 2015 for its sustainable tourism and its governance by usos y costumbres (Vive Oaxaca). Besides Punta Cometa, you can visit the Mexican Turtle Center, wander the village or swing by San Agustinillo and Zipolite, a few minutes away on the same road.
