Zicatela nightlife: the 2026 guide to going out and getting back stress-free | KORU

Puerto Escondido has two very distinct personalities once night falls. La Punta, south of Zicatela, is the mellow start: dirt streets, bohemian bars, live music and an early close, almost always between 11 pm and midnight. It is perfect for a seafood dinner and the first relaxed drinks. Zicatela, along Avenida del Morro, is the long night: beach bars that turn into dance floors and venues that close much later, with a more intense atmosphere facing the sea. The logic that works is grouping by neighborhood: start calmly in La Punta and finish in Zicatela, not the other way around.

Bars start filling up after 9 pm and Zicatela's long nights really kick off past 11 pm. The season sets the tone: the dry season runs November to April (best from December to April, with more sun and little rain) and the rainy season May to October, according to Blog Volaris. Zicatela's big swell, only suitable for expert surfers, is largest between May and August, so in those months the beach is more about the show than swimming. Nights spike around surf events: according to the World Surf League, the Torneo Internacional Zicatela Mexican Pro ran November 28–30, 2025 and the Pacifico Surf Open QS 1000 December 12–15, the first Qualifying Series event on mainland Mexico since 2019. On top of that, on March 21, 2026 Puerto Escondido was named the 14th World Surfing Reserve (Save The Waves Coalition), which has packed the city's calendar even more.

At night the options change. Walking alone is comfortable only in well-lit, busy areas, like the main stretch of Avenida del Morro. For longer distances, the taxi is king and there is usually service all night in Zicatela; Uber normally does not operate. A colectivo is a shared van or minibus that follows a fixed route and charges by segment: it is cheap and handy by day, but it barely runs in the early hours, so count on a taxi to get back from a night out. Zicatela is a very active tourist area at night, and tourism keeps growing: according to Sectur Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM) received 664,510 passengers from January to August 2025, up 10.58% versus 2024, with 81.18% average occupancy and flights from Viva, Volaris, Aeroméxico and United. More people means more atmosphere, but also more care with the basics. Walk on lit streets and avoid the dark stretches of the beach or the back streets. Keep an eye on your drink, carry moderate amounts of cash and keep a card separate. Always prioritize safe transport and, if something feels off or uncomfortable, leave right away: the best night is the one that ends well.
