Quick answer
San José del Pacífico sits ~130–135 km from Puerto Escondido (yotellevo.mx): 3–4 hours on Federal 200 to Pochutla and then the winding Federal 175. With KORU you rent your jeep in Puerto Escondido and climb into the sierra in 2026, a cold cloud forest at ~2,400–2,500 m.
Why drive up to San José del Pacífico from the coast?
You go from coastal heat to the cool mist of the Sierra Sur in a few hours. San José del Pacífico lies in the municipality of San Mateo Río Hondo at ~2,400–2,500 m of altitude (México Desconocido), known as the 'mushroom capital', with cloud forests, cabins and mysticism. It is not an official Pueblo Mágico: it was left out of the 2023 federal expansion (El Imparcial de Oaxaca), yet it keeps its magical feel.
What is the route from Puerto Escondido like?
You take Federal 200 east along the coast ~70 km to San Pedro Pochutla and then climb north on Federal 175, about 60 km of curves. Route 175 runs from Buenavista (Veracruz) to Puerto Ángel, ~579 km in total (Wikipedia), and is the scenic spine of the Sierra Sur: narrow, very winding, with fog in the high areas and limited cell coverage. Plan 3–4 hours, conservative given curves and possible roadworks.
Mind the routes
The new Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway (104 km, opened 4 February 2024, SICT) cut Oaxaca City–coast to ~2.5 h, but it does NOT pass through San José del Pacífico: the village remains on the old, scenic Federal 175.
What weather to expect and how to dress?
Cold cloud-forest weather all year. Night temperatures hover around ~9°C and can drop to 5–10°C, with frequent fog in the mid-afternoon and pre-dawn, greatest risk between 02:00 and 07:00 (climamexico.mx). It is a radical contrast with the beach heat, so bring layers and warm clothing. The dry season from November to April brings clear skies and a sea of clouds; June–September is greener, ideal for mushrooms, with slippery roads.
Which vehicle works best and what to check?
The main road (Federal 175) is paved and does not require 4x4, but a high SUV or jeep gives stability on curves and in rain. Check brakes, lights and wipers before heading up, drive by day and slow down in fog. The road is well travelled; taken calmly and with good visibility, you enjoy the scenery without rushing.
Tip
Fill up on the coast before heading up: there are few gas stations in the sierra. Avoid driving late or tired on the curves and take short breaks to rest your eyes.
“The climb into the sierra is best with time to spare: leave early, tank full and unhurried. The cloud forest rewards those who drive calmly.”
