Scenic roads of the Oaxaca coast: the complete 2026 route | KORU

Federal Highway 200 is the Pacific coastal backbone: according to Wikipedia it runs about 2,000 km across seven states, from Nayarit to Chiapas. On the Oaxaca coast it links Pinotepa Nacional, Puerto Escondido, Pochutla, Puerto Ángel, Mazunte, Zipolite and Huatulco. It is far more than the Puerto Escondido–Mazunte stretch: it is the spine of the whole region, with the sea appearing and vanishing between climbs and descents.

The Puerto Escondido–Huatulco stretch on Federal Highway 200 is about 100 to 110 km and takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by car without stops, not three. With pauses at viewpoints, beaches and towns, plan a full day. It is a two-lane road, with speed bumps entering and leaving each town; the pace is set by the curves and grades, not by rushing.

Mazunte, San Agustinillo and Zipolite are not on Federal Highway 200 itself: you leave the highway at the San Antonio junction and take a local road toward these beaches. In Mazunte is Punta Cometa, the southernmost point of mainland Mexico and, per the Mazunte town hall, one of the country's finest sunset viewpoints. Arrive at dawn or dusk, when the light transforms the landscape.

The region's biggest road change is the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla toll road, opened on 4 February 2024. According to CAPUFE it is 104.3 km long, has two toll plazas and cuts the trip from the Oaxaca capital to the coast to about 2.5 hours. Tolling began on 31 January 2025 after a free period; per casetas.com.mx each plaza costs around $234 MXN per car, about $468 MXN for the full run.

From Federal Highway 200 you can reach the La Ventanilla mangrove lagoon, the Mexican Turtle Centre in Mazunte and Huatulco National Park, run by CONANP since 2000, covering 11,891 hectares and listed as Ramsar Site 1321 per Wikipedia. The region has two gateway airports: Puerto Escondido (PXM), which handled 948,590 passengers in 2025, and Bahías de Huatulco (HUX), with 801,803 passengers that same year, both per Wikipedia.
