Puerto Escondido beach guide 2026: which vehicle to choose for your plan | KORU

Quick answer

Which vehicle should you choose to tour Puerto Escondido's beaches in 2026? It depends on your plan: a scooter for the nearby beaches (Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito, Manzanillo, 10-15 minutes away), an ATV or side-by-side for dirt roads and unpaved viewpoints, and a 5-seat jeep with a trunk and air conditioning for groups or long highway trips. At KORU we rent in Puerto Escondido and help you choose and get a quote over WhatsApp.

Which vehicle is best for touring Puerto Escondido's beaches?

Puerto Escondido's beaches sit close together, so the question isn't only which to visit but what to get there in. Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito and Manzanillo are 10-15 minutes from the center; Zicatela and La Punta are within the city; and if you want to jump to Mazunte or the Chacahua Lagoons, now you're on the highway. The rule of thumb is simple: you pick the vehicle by your plan, your group and the destination, not the other way around.

Scooter or motorbike for the nearby beaches? What does the 2025 law require?

A scooter is the obvious choice for one or two people on a laid-back plan: it sips fuel, parks in any gap and drops you at Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito or Manzanillo in 10-15 minutes. But there's an important change to respect: since September 2025, the Oaxaca Congress reformed the Traffic Law (passed 32-0) to require a certified helmet under standard NOM-206-SCFI/SSA2-2018 for both rider and passenger, and raised the passenger's minimum age from 10 to 12. In short: if you're traveling with a child under 12, the scooter is no longer an option. Confirm helmet, insurance and deposit with KORU before booking.

ATV or side-by-side for dirt roads and viewpoints?

When the plan involves dirt roads, dunes or off-pavement viewpoints, the ATV and the side-by-side are kings. But be careful: there is no general permit to drive off-road wherever you like. The Chacahua Lagoons, about 70 km to the west, are a National Park (14,175 hectares, per CONANP) with olive ridley and leatherback turtle nesting, mangroves and over 200 bird species; vehicle access must respect the conservation zones. As a market reference, a guided ATV tour runs around MXN 2,000 per person including helmet, protective gear, fuel and a bilingual guide, but that's a tour price, not a rental price: get your rental quote straight from KORU.

Traveling as a group? When is a jeep with air conditioning the move?

For a family, a group or long trips, the 5-seat jeep wins: luggage fits in the trunk and the air conditioning makes all the difference in the peak sun hours. And the weather rules: in Puerto Escondido temperatures run from 22 to 35 °C, with a dry season from December to April (the best window is November to February) and rain from June to October, about 1,200 mm a year peaking in September (Weather Spark). An open vehicle is glorious when it's dry; in the rain, you'll be glad for a roof. Also, since the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway opened (104.3 km, inaugurated February 4, 2024), the Oaxaca city–coast trip dropped from about 6.5 to roughly 2.5 hours (CAPUFE), and a jump to Mazunte is ~65 km, between 1.5 and 2 hours.

There's no single best vehicle: there's the one that fits your plan for the day. Tell us which beaches you want, who you're traveling with and what terrain you'll hit, and we'll tell you what to get there in.
