Quick answer
As a digital nomad in Oaxaca, you'll work well if you sort out two things before you arrive: the internet where you're staying and a fixed place for calls. The Centro Histórico and Reforma both have coworking spaces with day passes, and as a tourist, Mexico's immigration institute (INM) authorizes up to 180 days. KORU has no vehicles in Oaxaca City; if you head down to the coast, you can rent by the week or month there, in Puerto Escondido.
Digital nomad Oaxaca: internet and neighborhoods to stay in
In the state of Oaxaca, only 55.5% of households had internet in 2024, against 73.6% nationwide, according to INEGI's ENDUTIH survey. That figure lumps the capital in with the mountains and small towns, but it explains why WiFi isn't a given here. In the city, what makes or breaks your month is where you stay. Our take: an apartment with fiber and a desk beats a gorgeous colonial house with one router for ten rooms. If you have early calls, sleep close to where you'll work.
Which coworking spaces are in the Centro and Reforma?
The common mistake is landing on a Monday with a 9:30 call and no idea where to connect. Atzomx, a café and coworking space at Los Libres 800-B in the Centro Histórico, advertises 1000 Mbps fiber on its upstairs floor and opens Monday to Friday from 9 am to 6 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 8 pm. Psicowork has branches in Reforma (Av. Belisario Domínguez 914 A) and the Centro (Manuel Doblado 716), with a Day Pass that includes internet and coffee, weekdays from 9 am to 9 pm. Both sell access by the hour, day or week; ask each one for rates.
Heads up
A listing that says fast WiFi is not a speed test. Ask for a recent screenshot, taken in the room where you'll work. If the host doesn't have one, add a coworking pass in the Centro or Reforma from day one.
How long can you stay in Mexico as a digital nomad?
Up to 180 days if you enter as a visitor without permission to carry out paid activities, the status the INM grants for tourism (Ley de Migración, art. 52). If you fly in, the INM gives you an entry stamp and you can download your Forma Migratoria Múltiple within 60 days: it's your proof of legal stay. The law has no status for digital nomads; if your case has gray areas, ask a Mexican consulate before you travel. To stay longer than 180 days, the first step is a temporary resident visa: you apply at a Mexican consulate, prove financial solvency and exchange it at the INM for a card valid one to four years (Mexican Consulate in Chicago).
How do you get around the city and down to the coast?
Straight up: KORU has no vehicles in Oaxaca City. Day to day you won't miss one between the Centro, Jalatlaco and Reforma: you walk or take a taxi. Where a vehicle really changes your month is on the coast: on the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway, open since February 2024, the SICT estimated the drive to Puerto Escondido at about two and a half hours. You get there on your own and rent locally, where vehicles are listed; each rental runs up to 30 days, with a possible discount from 4 days depending on the provider. Our rule: Oaxaca for work, the coast to switch off; no calls on the day you drive down the mountains.
“Oaxaca is a city you work on foot, between the morning coffee and the afternoon coworking session. The coast is another story: there you do need a vehicle, which is why you'll find one with us in Puerto Escondido, not in the city.”
