Markets and souvenirs in Puerto Escondido 2026: what to buy and how to bargain | KORU

The heart of shopping is the Benito Juárez Market, the most genuine market in town: founded in 1894 as 'Porfirio Díaz' and renamed in 1912, it is where the Mixtec, Chatino and Zapotec peoples converge (México Desconocido). Its plaza days —the busiest and best stocked— are Wednesday and Saturday, roughly 6:00 to 19:00; go early. El Adoquín (downtown), Zicatela and La Punta also have shops, but they are more tourist-oriented and not on the same level of authenticity. Mind the season: according to Sedetur Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido received 1,150,833 visitors in 2025, with high season from November to April, when everything fills up.

Buy with intention and know the origin, so you can judge authenticity. Genuine black clay is made in San Bartolo Coyotepec, a Zapotec village; its signature shine comes from burnishing the piece before firing, a technique discovered in the 1950s (México Desconocido). Alebrijes carved in copal wood and hand-painted come from San Martín Tilcajete and San Antonio Arrazola. Wool rugs from Teotitlán del Valle use natural dyes such as cochineal (red) and indigo (blue), a detail that tells the handmade piece from the industrial one. On the coast there are also local cotton textiles. And as an edible souvenir, Oaxacan table chocolate (for example Mayordomo, founded in 1956) rarely disappoints.

Mezcal has held a Denomination of Origin since 1994, and Oaxaca is by far the dominant producer: it accounted for 90.51% of the national certified production in 2023, out of a total of 12,239,655 liters, according to the 2024 COMERCAM Report. To be safe, look for artisanal mezcal certified by COMERCAM (compliance with NOM-070) and always buy it in a sealed original bottle. On flying with it: on flights within Mexico, alcoholic drinks travel only in checked luggage, up to 5 liters per passenger, under 70% alcohol and in sealed, well-packed bottles (Volaris policy). Mezcal is around 45%, so it complies with no trouble.

Bargaining is part of market culture, but you do it with respect, not for the sake of haggling. Say hello, ask the price, value the work and say thanks; if a piece interests you, offer politely and accept that a fair price supports whoever made it. Forget the 'rule' percentages floating around online: every piece and every artisan is different. On money, pay in pesos or change at a bank: the FIX exchange rate was around 18.38 pesos per dollar (Banxico, September 2025), and the dollar 'rate' some sellers offer is almost always unfavorable. Carry cash in small bills; many stalls have no card terminal.
