What is the difference between Mazunte and San Agustinillo? Mazunte is a livelier village with a wellness, art and nightlife scene; San Agustinillo, just five minutes away on the same road, is smaller, more family-friendly and has a calmer beach for swimming. How are the two villages alike and how do they differ?
Mazunte and San Agustinillo share the same sea, the same road and just a few minutes' distance, yet they feel different. Mazunte went from a turtle-hunting village to a byword for conscious tourism: yoga, natural cosmetics, cafés, art and gentle nightlife. It is a Pueblo Mágico and draws more people. San Agustinillo, by contrast, keeps a more fishing-village, laid-back air, with a small cove where families spend the day unhurried. Choosing between them is about the pace you want, not about which is better.
How do you get there from Puerto Escondido and how long does it take?
From Puerto Escondido it is about 67 km along the coastal federal highway 200, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by car; the same stretch serves Mazunte, San Agustinillo and Zipolite (Rome2rio). Pochutla is the main services and fuel hub between Puerto and these villages, so it is wise to fill the tank there. For those arriving from farther afield, according to Sectur Oaxaca the Puerto Escondido airport (PXM) handled 664,510 passengers from January to August 2025, up 10.58% on the previous year, with routes from Mexico City, AIFA, Monterrey, Guadalajara and Houston. And if you drive from the city of Oaxaca, the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway, opened in February 2024, cut that trip from about 6.5 to 2.5 hours, with a car toll near 234 MXN since 2025 (CAPUFE).
What makes Mazunte unique?
Mazunte holds the corridor's most social, wellness-oriented side. This is where the Mexican Turtle Center (CONANP) sits, a good stop to understand the coastal ecosystem: it opens Wednesday to Saturday 10:00–16:30 and Sunday 10:00–14:30, closed Monday and Tuesday, with general entry at 50 MXN, a student discount and free for under-12s and over-60s (CONANP, 2025). A few minutes' walk away is Punta Cometa, a clifftop lookout with one of the finest sunsets in southern Mexico; you reach it on foot only, about 15 to 25 minutes from the village. Mazunte has more restaurants, shops, a craft market and evening buzz, but its main beach can have currents depending on the season.
What makes San Agustinillo different?
San Agustinillo is smaller, and its economy still revolves around fishing and small-scale tourism. The beach is a tucked-in bay with gentler waves in its central part, which makes it more comfortable for swimming and for going with kids, though it is always wise to ask locals about the day's currents. You won't see the same number of workshops or the nightlife of Mazunte here: what prevails is everyday life, fishermen mending nets, fresh food by the sea and long after-lunch chats. It is the choice for anyone who wants to slow down and fall asleep to the sound of the waves.
