On March 21, 2026, in a ceremony with more than 350 attendees, Puerto Escondido was dedicated as the planet's 14th World Surfing Reserve (according to Save The Waves Coalition, the organization that created the World Surfing Reserves program in 2009). The designation recognizes the Zicatela wave, the so-called 'Mexican Pipeline', its coastline and the local surf community as heritage of global value. In practice, it is a seal that puts Puerto on the map alongside places like Malibu, Ericeira or the Gold Coast, and that activates a local council to care for the area.
Does the designation legally protect the wave and the beaches?
Not directly. The World Surfing Reserve is not a binding legal figure: it does not turn the coast into a legally protected zone, nor does it by itself force the authorities to halt a project. It is a management framework and an organized community voice that can drive future legal safeguards, but it does not decree them. We used to put this wrongly and we are correcting it: there is no decree banning beachfront construction and no committee with veto power over every project. What there is, is a Local Stewardship Council with the ability to press, monitor and negotiate.
Is it Mexico's first World Surfing Reserve, and how many waves does it cover?
It is not the first: it is Mexico's second. The first was Bahía de Todos Santos, in Ensenada, Baja California, dedicated on June 21, 2014 as the world's 6th reserve. The Puerto Escondido one covers about 10 km (6.2 miles) of coast and eight waves. Official sources clearly name five breaks: Zicatela ('Mexican Pipeline'), Punta Colorada, La Punta de Zicatela, Playa Marinero and Playa Carrizalillo; the other three are not verifiably listed, so we do not make them up. Coco Nogales and Greg Long are listed as ambassadors, and the municipalities of San Pedro Mixtepec and Santa María Colotepec are part of the project.
When are there waves, and for what level of surfer?
The surf beaches are spread over several kilometers, so getting around in your own vehicle gives you the freedom to chase wherever it breaks best. Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM) is about 3 km from downtown and handled 948,590 passengers in 2025 (PXM airport guide 2025); from there to Playa Zicatela it is about 10-15 minutes.
