What is Zipolite and why does its vibe feel so different?
Zipolite is a small beach town on the Mazunte–San Agustinillo corridor, about 67 km west of Puerto Escondido. Unlike other beaches in the area, the pace here is slower and the attitude more relaxed. It is one of the few beaches in Mexico where nudity is optional and publicly accepted, though that is only part of its character: what truly defines it is an unpretentious freedom, people reading under the palapas and sunsets watched without hurry. It is not a place to 'do tourism' in the classic sense, but simply to be.
How do you get to Zipolite from Puerto Escondido?
The route is direct: take the coastal Federal Highway 200 westward. It is about 67 km and roughly 1 hour 15 minutes by car (per Rome2rio), the same stretch that leads to Mazunte and San Agustinillo, so you can combine the three towns in one day. The road is mostly paved, with curves and slopes where you should slow down. Pochutla is the main hub for services and fuel between Puerto Escondido and the corridor, so fill up there in the morning. Avoid driving at night: Highway 200 has little lighting and sometimes animals crossing; plan to arrive and return in daylight.
If you are coming from farther away, access to this coast has improved a lot. For those driving from Oaxaca city, the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway (about 104 km, opened in February 2024) cut the trip from around 6.5 to 2.5 hours, with a car toll of about 234 MXN since 2025 (CAPUFE). And if you fly, Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM) handled 664,510 passengers from January to August 2025, up 10.58% year over year, with routes from Mexico City, AIFA, Monterrey, Guadalajara and Houston (Sectur Oaxaca). From Puerto Escondido, Zipolite is just over an hour away.
